USA Landscapes Portfolio

This gallery contains a selection of my landscape images from photography workshops I attended some years ago in the USA, including Colorado, Utah and Arizona. They are personal favourites primarily because of the locations, rather than whether they are 'nice' or 'good' images. As someone who lives in the UK, I was impressed with the sheer diversity of landscapes that exist in the United States, mountains, deserts, canyons, forests, along with some impressive and unique national parks. It would be nice to go back to see these places again, and visit new places too, but whether I will......who knows!

I hope you enjoy this small selection of USA landscape images.

ALABAMA HILLS - CALIFORNIA

The Alabama Hills are a range of hills and rock formations near the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in Owens Valley, west of Lone Pine, Inyo County, California. This image was taken shortly after sunrise, and shows Mount Whitney (tallest USA mountain) viewed through the Mobius Arch.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK - WYOMING

An image of autumn coloured aspen trees with Cathedral Group mountain peaks as a backdrop. I like the way the tops of the trees follow the undulating shape of the background mountain peaks.

ROCKY MOUNTAINS - COLORADO

The Durango & Silverton Railroad is a 3 ft narrow-gauge heritage railroad that operates 45 miles of track between Durango and Silverton, in the U.S. state of Colorado. This image was used for the front cover of Michael Portillo's book Great American Railroad Journeys.

ALABAMA HILLS - CALIFORNIA

This image shows a small plant growing in the crevice of a large rock covered with orange and yellow covered lichens in the Alabama Hills, California.

MOULTON BARN - GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK

The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, is one of the classic landscapes known to photographers in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA. For this sunrise image, it took three visits before the light was favourable, but the wait was certainly worthwhile.

ASPENS - MONTANA

A group of aspen trees with beautiful shades of yellow and orange colours during the autumn season in a Montana woodland.

ALABAMA HILLS - CALIFORNIA

This is a composite image, but using only elements from the same location. For the Mount Whitney viewpoint, the sky was clear with no clouds, so I separately photographed the sky west of the main viewpoint, then copied and pasted that into the image above.

ZION NATIONAL PARK - UTAH

A simple composition using the autumn coloured trees and large bolder within the shaded canyon walls in the background.

ZION NATIONAL PARK - UTAH

Glorious autumn coloured trees, with the orange canyon walls and blue sky providing a wonderful backdrop of a typical scene from Zion National Park.

MONUMENT VALLEY - UTAH

While in Monument Valley, we experienced a dust storm with fine particles of red sand being blown around in the air. Not ideal conditions for photography, but certainly adding a bit of drama to the scene in front of us.

COLORADO

Although the leaves on the aspen trees were not at their peak colours, the main attraction for this image was the horizontal wooden fence meandering its way through the vertical trunks of the trees.

GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK - WYOMING

Of all the places I visited during the USA photo workshops, this was one of my favourites. The orange colours of the trees were perfect when illuminated by the light, and the magnificent backdrop of the Grand Teton mountains gave us a majestic scene to capture with our cameras. Wonderful.

UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON

ARIZONA

UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON

ARIZONA

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. It includes two separate, scenic sections, referred to as Upper Antelope Canyon, and Lower Antelope Canyon. Its a classic location for landscape photography, but in recent years has become perhaps too popular and tends to get large numbers of visitors, making it difficult to get wider viewpoint images.

ARIZONA

UPPER ANTELOPE CANYON

ARIZONA

During my visit to Antelope Canyon, there were a large number of visitors for much of the time, so my images were more an attempt to capture the amazing swirling sandstone patterns in the slot canyon and the light shining down on them from above. An amazing place for photography, just a shame about the large numbers of visitors attending.

ZION NATIONAL PARK

UTAH

ZION NATIONAL PARK

UTAH

Zion was one of the National Parks I liked most during my USA workshop trips, having beautiful scenery and amazing colours, and lots of photo opportunities incorporating both big views and interesting smaller details within the park.

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

UTAH

BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK

UTAH

Early morning light catches the sandstone coloured hoodoo's at Bryce Canyon. The images above are identical, other than the one on the right having paint effects added to the image. I like them both equally.

MAROON BELLS WILDERNESS

COLORADO

CANYON DE CHELLEY

ARIZONA

The Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area located in the Elk Mountains of central Colorado, offering classic landscapes with water, mountains and autumnal aspen trees.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument was established on April 1, 1931, as a unit of the National Park Service. Located in northeastern Arizona, it is located on Navajo Nation land.
